Nourishing the Temple: Biblical Wisdom and Science for Healthy Living

But as believers, we are called not only to glorify God with our hearts and minds but also with our bodies. Scripture reminds us in 1 Corinthians 6:19-20 (NKJV): “Or do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and you are not your own? For you were bought at a price; therefore glorify God in your body and in your spirit, which are God’s.” This powerful truth challenges us to steward our health with intention and discipline.
One key element of a healthy diet is protein. Protein is essential for building and repairing tissues, supporting immune function, and preserving lean muscle mass—especially important when trying to lose fat. Incorporating lean meats, eggs, legumes, and dairy into your meals can help you feel fuller longer, reducing the temptation to snack on unhealthy foods.
Speaking of weight loss, many people struggle with understanding how it works. The most fundamental principle is achieving a calorie deficit—consuming fewer calories than your body needs to maintain its current weight. This doesn’t mean starving yourself, but rather making wise, portion-controlled food choices and being more active. It’s about balance, not extremes.
In addition to eating well, hydration is a cornerstone of good health. Water aids digestion, flushes toxins, supports brain function, and even helps with appetite control. Often, feelings of hunger are actually signs of dehydration. Aim for at least 8 glasses of water daily, and more if you’re active. As it says in Isaiah 58:11 (NKJV): “The Lord will guide you continually, and satisfy your soul in drought, and strengthen your bones; You shall be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters do not fail.” Staying hydrated is a spiritual and physical necessity.
